A TOPCon solar panel is a new-generation photovoltaic panel featuring a passivated contact structure designed to reduce electrical losses within the cell. But is this technology really better than a PERC panel? The short answer is: it is a strong option when the goal is high installed capacity within the same area, good temperature performance and long-term output; however, the right decision cannot be made by looking at the name of the cell technology alone.

Short answer: When does TOPCon stand out?

A TOPCon panel may offer an advantage when usable rooftop or land area is limited, high module efficiency is required, and the temperature coefficient and long-term power warranty matter to the investment calculation. If space is not constrained and two proposals offer similar annual yield, warranty and service conditions, the PERC solution with the lower total system cost may also be a rational choice. The comparison should be based on the total project cost and expected energy yield, rather than the panel price alone.

Use of space High module efficiency can help achieve more installed capacity within the same usable area.
Temperature performance A less negative temperature coefficient indicates that power loss may be more limited as the panel heats up.
Project compatibility Dimensions, current and voltage values, the mounting system and inverter limits must always be checked together.

What is a TOPCon solar panel?

TOPCon stands for Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact. A very thin oxide layer and a doped silicon contact structure are used on the rear surface of the cell. This structure is designed to reduce losses caused when electrical charge carriers recombine at the cell surface and to achieve a higher open-circuit voltage.

TOPCon does not describe a panel size or mean a “bifacial panel”; it defines the cell technology. A TOPCon module can be manufactured as monofacial or bifacial, with single or double glass, in different cell sizes and power classes. The “TOPCon” label alone therefore does not make two products equivalent.

Fraunhofer ISE's Photovoltaics Report, dated 14 July 2026, states that crystalline silicon and n-type TOPCon technology have become dominant in the global photovoltaic market and that commercial silicon module efficiencies have risen from approximately 17% to nearly 25% over the past decade. This market trend shows that the technology is becoming widespread; the technical data sheet and site design determine whether a specific product is suitable for your project.

What is a PERC panel?

PERC stands for Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell. The passivation layer on the rear surface of the cell helps reduce electron losses and redirect some of the light that might otherwise escape from the cell. PERC was one of the principal technologies in the monocrystalline panel market for many years and has built up a broad product base and extensive field experience.

In a TOPCon versus PERC comparison, the distinction between “old and new technology” is not sufficient on its own. A high-quality PERC module may be a better choice than a poorly designed, unsuitable or inadequately certified TOPCon module. Manufacturer reliability, certificates, product traceability, warranty conditions and installation quality are as important as the cell architecture.

Differences between TOPCon and PERC

Comparison of TOPCon and PERC solar panels
Comparison criterion TOPCon PERC What should be checked?
Cell structure Tunnel-oxide passivated contact, generally on n-type silicon Rear-surface passivation, generally on p-type silicon The manufacturer, series and certification as well as the technology name
Module efficiency Can generally offer higher values in current product families May be competitive depending on the product series, but can be lower in many comparisons Data-sheet efficiency of modules with the same external dimensions
Temperature coefficient Has the potential to offer a less negative value May be more negative depending on the product The Pmax temperature coefficient in the data sheet; a negative value closer to zero is better
Long-term performance The n-type structure may stand out for its potential for lower light-induced degradation Offers mature technology and extensive field history Maximum first-year and annual power loss, plus minimum output at the end of the warranty
Bifacial option Commonly available in bifacial designs Bifacial models are also available Rear-side gain depends on ground reflectivity, height and row spacing
Cost The price per panel may be higher; space and BOS advantages may offset the difference May offer a lower initial cost depending on inventory and project conditions Installed system cost and modelled annual yield, not just the panel price

An important technical limitation

Long-term field data for newer cell architectures are naturally more limited than for older technologies such as PERC. The IEA PVPS report on degradation and failure modes in new PV technologies, published in 2025, notes that TOPCon designs are evolving rapidly and that differences in materials and manufacturing can affect durability. The tests, certificates and warranty wording of the specific model should therefore be reviewed instead of relying on the technology class alone.

What are the advantages of TOPCon panels?

Higher installed capacity in a limited area

Module efficiency indicates how much of the solar energy reaching the panel surface can be converted into electrical energy. A more efficient panel can offer a higher Wp rating within the same external dimensions. This difference is valuable on industrial rooftops where chimneys, ventilation equipment, safety corridors and shading restrict the usable area.

Potential to limit power loss in hot weather

Panel output is specified under standard laboratory test conditions; under real-site conditions, instantaneous output generally decreases as cell temperature rises. The Pmax temperature coefficient is stated as a percentage per °C. For example, all other conditions being equal, a model rated at -0.29%/°C will be less affected by rising temperature than one rated at -0.35%/°C. However, the annual gain is not simply the direct difference between these two figures; it must be modelled using the climate file and system losses.

Long-term warranty options

Long linear performance warranties are available for many TOPCon products. Product and performance warranties must be distinguished: the product warranty covers materials and workmanship, while the performance warranty states the minimum power level promised for specified years. Exclusions, the claims procedure, and labour and transport conditions should also be reviewed.

What are the limitations of TOPCon panels?

  • A higher Wp rating does not mean a better fit for every roof: A large, high-current module can affect the transport and installation plan as well as inverter selection.
  • Bifacial gain is not automatic: Expected additional yield may be limited if the panel is very close to the roof, the rear surface is shaded or the ground reflects little light.
  • A new-technology label is not a quality certificate: IEC compliance, manufacturing quality, product traceability and after-sales support must be verified separately.
  • The panel price does not describe the total investment: The mounting system, inverter, cables, protection equipment, labour, engineering and operating costs must be calculated together.
  • Nominal efficiency is not annual yield: Orientation, tilt, shading, temperature, soiling, inverter losses and grid constraints change actual generation.

For which projects might TOPCon make more sense?

Conditions favouring TOPCon

  • Usable rooftop area is limited and the target installed capacity is high
  • The temperature coefficient affects project yield because of hot climate conditions
  • The long-term power warranty is a decisive factor in the financial model
  • Bifacial generation will be used with suitable ground conditions and layout
  • Reducing the number of panels provides a measurable advantage in BOS and installation planning

Conditions in which PERC can be considered

  • There is no area constraint and the target capacity can be accommodated comfortably
  • A verified PERC proposal offers a clear advantage in total system cost
  • The modelled annual yield and warranty conditions of both solutions are similar

Eight-point checklist for choosing a TOPCon panel

  1. Module efficiency and external dimensions: Compare W/m² rather than Wp for the same area, and include maintenance corridors.
  2. Pmax temperature coefficient: Check the conditions under which the value applies and its impact on the project climate.
  3. Electrical compatibility: Verify Voc, Vmp, Isc and Imp against the inverter's MPPT voltage range, maximum input current and cold-weather Voc calculation.
  4. Mechanical compatibility: Evaluate panel dimensions, weight, clamping zones, wind and snow loads, and mounting-system structural calculations together.
  5. Warranty wording: Read the product warranty, first-year loss, annual linear loss, minimum end-of-warranty output and claims procedure separately.
  6. Certificates and tests: Confirm that the model code matches the submitted document and check its scope of validity and the required environmental tests.
  7. Product traceability: Ensure that the serial number, manufacturer record and technical documentation will remain accessible after installation.
  8. Energy-yield model: Compare proposals using the same climate data, shading assumptions, loss rates and usable area.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, TOPCon panels on the market are generally manufactured from monocrystalline silicon cells. “Monocrystalline” describes the silicon structure, while “TOPCon” describes the cell's contact and passivation architecture; they are not alternatives to each other.

No. TOPCon is a cell technology; bifacial means that the panel can collect light from its front and rear surfaces. A TOPCon panel can be either monofacial or bifacial. The yield gain from a bifacial design depends on installation geometry and the reflective properties of the ground.

Low-irradiance performance can vary between products, but cell technology alone does not solve the effects of partial shading. Bypass-diode layout, panel orientation, string design, the inverter/MPPT structure and, where required, optimisation solutions must be assessed together.

The price varies according to power class, module construction, warranty, order volume and market conditions. The price per panel should be evaluated together with cost per Wp, total installed system cost, annual yield model and warranty coverage.

A definitive service-life judgement cannot be made from cell technology alone. Material selection, glass and encapsulation structure, manufacturing quality, installation, climate and maintenance all affect service life. The minimum output values at the end of the warranty and independent test results of specific products should be compared.

A definitive answer cannot be given without a model-specific calculation. The panel's Voc, Vmp, Isc and Imp values must be checked against the string length, minimum design temperature and the inverter's MPPT voltage and input-current limits. This verification should be carried out by a qualified project team.
